Deer shifted from zoo to wildlife parks

Hyderabad: The city zoo is shifting excess herbivore population from its premises to various wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves across the state.

Nine female blackbucks and seven nilgais were shifted to extension four of the Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park and Kawal Tiger Reserve respectively on August 20.

Recently 20 blackbucks were also shifted to the Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park. This activity is being carried out as part of a conservation breeding programme of wild animals in the zoo which are then released into various wildlife sanctuaries to improve the prey population in those areas.

“We display many animals in the zoo and some of them are native species, which breed really well due to the congenial environment. The zoo has reached its limit and since we cannot expand, we translocate some of these animals to their natural habitat after they reach a certain phase in the zoo. Herbivores adapt well to such a sudden change in environment,” said A. Shankaran, curator of the zoo.

He, however, said that a similar procedure could not be adopted for carnivores as they don’t adapt to change well. The zoo authorities are also proposing to shift 20 sambars, 12 nilgais, 200 spotted deers and 10 blackbucks to the Nagar-junasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve and Kawal Tiger Reserve over the next few weeks.
