Srikalahasti relic collapses

Tirupati: Three years after the 500-year-old Rajagopuram at Srikalahasti temple collapsed, one of the kalasams atop the entrance Gopuram of the temple dislodged and fell on the ground on Thursday evening.

At around 4 pm the kalasam, weighing around 10 kg, collapsed into the interior complex of the temple from the 30-foot-high entrance gopuram, said to have been built about 800 years ago. The limestone and clay-brick kalasam broke into pieces after falling.

Thankfully no one was hurt as there was not much rush at the temple when the incident took place given the on going Samaikyandhra agitations.

Most of the shops inside the complex were also closed due to the strike.

Devotees and locals who rushed to the spot after the incident complained that though weeds and cracks could clearly be seen on the entrance structure, the temple authorities and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials were not bothered to protect the historic structure.

The temple, which dates back to the Third Century AD, saw its glory years between the 12th to 16th centuries, reaching its zenith during the rule of the Vijayanagar kings.

On May 26, 2010, the massive 500-year-old 175-foot-high Rajagopuram in front of the temple had collapsed. And though the government took steps to reconstruct the Rajagopuram, the work is getting stalled for one reason or the other.
