Nellore: The inability of RTC to operate buses in view of ongoing strike by major workers unions’ of the corporation has been resulting in Rs 80 lakh revenue loss in Nellore region and Rs 5 crores in Nellore zone per day. Nellore zone consists of Nellore, Prakasam and Chittoor.

Incidentally, Nellore is the only district out of 13 Seemandhra districts where RTC is able to run 30 per cent of its services.Although it is a drop in the ocean with respect to normal revenue, Nellore region has been earning RS 18 lakh per day from these operations.

Thanks to the cooperation of Staff and Workers Federation (SWF), the only union that had not joined the strike which started from midnight of August 12. Drivers and conductors of the union have been manning the 200 odd buses out of 761 operating now. Apart from Nellore, Alipiri in Tirupati is running buses only between Tirupati and Tirumala.

Akin to the adage ‘Somebody’s loss is another’s gain’ railway income increased considerably in the backdrop of RTC strike. Not only railways, private bus operators have been reaping benefits and almost fleecing the travelling public taking advantage of the strike. They have charged double the fare during recent marriage season and continuing the same during weekends.

The advantage for private operators is that RTC is not operating services to Hyderabad and Bengaluru, although 30 percent of fleet is in operation, fearing damage to the buses in neighbouring Prakasam and Chittoor districts where the intensity of the agitation is very high.

Nellore railway station handled as many as 3,49,469 passengers and made Rs 1.79 crore between August 1 and 28. The revenue was Rs 1.66 crore and passenger traffic was 3,31,504 in the previous month (July-2013).

The revenue during the corresponding period last year (August 2012) was Rs 1.25 crores and passenger traffic was 3,12,942. Nellore railway station Manager S.K.Shajahan said that the passenger traffic used to around 8,000 to 9,000 per day in the past and it was increased to 12,000 to 13,000 because of the strike.
