Chennai: Rebecca Sheila Doss is 11 years old and has set the record for being the youngest girl to pass the Grade 8 keyboard practicals from Trinity College, London. Now, this student of Velammal Vidyashram is setting her sights on another record and this time it’s on the piano.
“She started learning the piano only in June, but plays well enough for her to plan to appear for the Grade 8 exam directly in November,” says her father R. Doss John, senior principal at Velammal, Surapet. She set the record last year and the proud father says, “Rebecca started learning from the tender age of three.
She worked very hard and used to practice one hour continuously to set this record. All credit goes to her three teachers and also the CEO of the Velammal Educational Trust M.V.M Velmurugan for supporting us,” says John.
Rebecca considers herself lucky for having met the maestro Ilaiyaraja and receiving a certificate from him. “My favourite is Ilaiyaraja uncle and I want to become a music director in future,” she smiles. If the keyboard is her father’s favourite instrument, she loves the piano. “My father guides and motivates me,” she says.
A state-level tennis player too, Rebecca is an inspiration for not just children her age, but also for her two younger sisters. One is in kindergarten and the other plays squash.
