Jurala fire cuts 160 MW

Hyderabad: A fire in the Jurala hydel station has cost the state grid 160 MW of crucial power. Technical snags resulting in a surge of current entering the system caused the fire and resultant smoke in the hydel turbines late on Monday.

The fire that affected four of the six units halted the generation of roughly 130 to 160 MW of power.

“Four units tripped on Monday night and we are still examining the nature of the problem. We will know better after completing the process but from the preliminary examination, it looks like some parts were damaged.

We have some spares that can be used to restore the system once we are sure of the problem,” said G. Adhisheshu, director (hydel) AP Genco.

The loss of substantial power from the four units will create a dent in the supply but may not affect power supply in cities.
