Drunk driver kills six, injures four

ONGOLE: An inebriated driver of a sand-laden lorry killed six people and injured four others when his vehicle hit a two-wheeler and an auto at two different places on the Ongole-Chirala highway on Sunday.

According to reports, the lorry first hit a two-wheeler near Chadalavada village of Naguluppalapadu mandal killing two people on the spot. The victims were identified as P Mallikharjuna (35) of Santhanuthalapadu and Syam (28) of Proddatur in Kadapa district.

Both Mallikharjuna and Syam were merchants and were on their way to a cold storage unit near NG Padu on a bike when they met with the accident. The lorry driver fled from the spot.

A few minutes later, the lorry collided with an auto on the same highway near Maddiralapadu village killing four more people on the spot. All the four victims were traveling in the ill-fated auto. The deceased were identified as P Narayanamma (70), Venkata Lakshmi (27), and her daughter Anjali (3). The identity of one victim is yet to be known.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry, moving at a high speed, hit two more vehicles. The driver was caught by the locals after the vehicle came to a halt by hitting the road divider. The locals thrashed the driver before handing him over to the police. Ongole DSP P Jhashuva visited the spot and shifted the bodies to Ongole government hospital for autopsy.
