DD students can apply again

Chennai: Two victims of the fraud played by the management of D.D. Medical College and D.D. Hospitals, who not only lost their money but also one year, got a small relief with the Madras HC directing the authorities to consider their applications for admission to first-year MBBS course during the third counselling.

Passing orders on the petitions of R. Vijayaiswarya and A.K. Sahana, Justice K.K. Sasidharan gave liberty to them to make an application to condone the delay in making the application for admission to the first-year MBBS course.

The selection committee was directed to consider the applications sympathetically taking into account the background facts. The exercise should be completed within one week from the date of receipt of applications, the judge added.

The judge said there was no dispute that before the cut-off date the petitioners have not made any application before the selection committee. According to the petitioners, they were expecting that orders would be passed permitting the students to write the public examination. It was only after the dismissal of their petitions and appeals that they realised the gravity of the situation and had come up with these petitions.

Senior counsel Nalini Chidambaram wanted the court to direct the authorities to permit the petitioners to take part in the third round of counselling, “I am inclined to issue any such positive direction, without giving an opportunity to the government to consider the request,” the judge added The judge said the petitioners alone were not responsible for this sorry state of affairs.

The statutory authorities also failed to act swiftly by taking action against the institution. The management of the medical college with a view to extract money falsely represented that the college had Medical Council of India approval. It was only under such circumstances, the petitioners have approached the institution for admission.

The petitioners have already lost one year. The request now made by the petitioners warrants consideration by the authorities keeping in view the plight of poor students who lost money and valuable time, the judge added.
