Chennai: A former woman CPI councillor from Sivagangai municipality, aged 36, who went missing four days back from her native place, was rescued from a home in Sripuram, at St Thomas Mount, Chennai, on Saturday where she had been kept in captivity.
She was found with her hair cut and had cut injuries all over her body, inflicted using a blade. The police arrested a former DMK councillor from Sivagangai, who had allegedly kept her in captivity in his house in Chennai.“Former councillor Vanitha was rescued after she called the city police control room using the mobile phone which her abductor had left in the room by mistake before locking her inside,” the police said on Sunday.
The police arrested Kumaran, 37, another former councillor from Sivagangai. “The two were very close and we suspect that they were involved in an extra-marital relationship. Vanitha had been living with her mother after getting separated from her husband and during the last two years, her relationship with Kumaran became stronger.
However, Kumaran started doubting that she was having a relationship with another person and brought her to Chennai to ‘teach her a lesson’,” the police said.
He brought her to his city home where she was locked up in a room. He cut off her long hair and also inflicted injuries on her body, using a blade. On Saturday, when he went out, he had left one of his mobile phones in her room by mistake. Using the phone, Vanitha called the city police control room and also informed her mother and brother about her situation, the police said.
The police rescued her after receiving the SOS. “The police managed to be latch on to the trail of Kumaran, who was staying in a hotel in the city, by tracking the signals of his second mobile phone,” said the police. He was arrested under sections relating to woman harassment and attempt to murder.
