Chennai: A mass run will be organised in the city on September 11 from Vivekanandar Illam abutting the Marina beach to commemorate the historic speech of Swami Vivekananda in Chicago.

The event - Run for the Nation - is being organised as part of the 150th birth anniversary of the “wandering monk” of the highest order and patriot at 4 pm at Vivekanandar Illam, Triplicane. Those in the 18 to 40 years age group, keen on participating in the run could register online at http://vivekananda150run.com/.

The Chicago speech assumes special importance in the celebrations as it was in Chicago (on September 11, 1893), that Swami Vivekananda delivered his historic “Sisters and brothers” address to World Parliament of Religions. He gave self-respect, dignity and purpose to his motherland through his address and upon his return to India, he gave a rousing call to India “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Also, fulfilling the wish of Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna Universal Temple has been constructed in Homer Glen. The University of Chicago has established a new visiting professorship in Indian studies to commemorate the legacy of spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda, supported by a $1.5 million gift from India.
