I told Vajpayee not to give Telangana, boasts Chandrababu Naidu

Guntur: Appearing to resile from his support for Telangana, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday expressed solidarity with leaders of the various JACs protesting against the proposed division of the state, and said their fears were genuine and justified.

He assured that he would be on their side until the apprehensions of the Seemandhra people were addressed.

“When the NDA government was in power, I had mounted pressure on the then prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and stopped creation of separate Telangana state,” Naidu said.

He criticised the CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for failing to stop the decision on Telangana state though the Congress was heading the government at the Centre.

Naidu seeks JACs' meet

TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has demanded that the government convene a meeting of JACs of both Telangana and Seemandhra regions, and resolve their problems before going ahead with bifurcation.

The TD chief, speaking during the launch of his bus yatra — Atma Gaurava Yatra — at Pondugala of Dachepally mandal near here,  asserted that people of the state had lived like brothers during his regime, and alleged the Congress created animosity among the residents of  both the regions.

“Though the Seemandhra people have been agitating for the last one month, the government has failed to take the initiative to resolve their problems,” he said.

He held the then Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy responsible for the creation of the Telangana state. YSR had led a team of 41 MLAs to Delhi and submitted a memorandum to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in favour of Telangana state, Naidu said.

“The Congress took a unilateral decision to divide the state to gain political mileage in the elections.” He accused the Congress of hatching a conspiracy to weaken the TD.
