Chennai: May it be a drop of rain or scorching sun rays, commuters waiting at some bus stops at Tiruvottiyur will feel these directly as there is no shelter at bus stops. The Chennai Corporation has removed five bus stops in the fourth ward as these were built by private companies in the locality.
“The corporation has demolished the bus shelters, considering them unauthorised. We do not know whom the structure belongs to. All we need is a roof to protect us from downpours,” rue residents. Of the six bus stands present in the area, five at Mullai nagar, Gandhi nagar, Earanaoor and Murugan koil were removed.
“We gave a letter to the corporation’s elected representatives requesting new bus shelters. But the top brass made it clear that this could take time,” said Venkataiah, district member, CITU. “Around 50,000 residents live here and there are at least five schools. School students and common public will get affected once the monsoon sets in,” he added.
“I was not made aware about the dismantling of bus shelters,” said M. Dhanaramesh, chairman, zone 1. “If so, I would have requested the corporation for some alternative arrangements to be made before the shelters were removed. Tenders have been floated for constructing new bus shelters and the ward will soon get proper shelters,” he added.
