Hyderabad: Breaking her silence over the state’s bifurcation issue for the first time since 2009, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said that the “decision on Telangana is over and there is no going back or changing the decision now”.

Gandhi also hinted at constituting an official committee to look into the fallout of the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to the media briefly on the issue during the inauguration of the National Media Centre in New Delhi, the Congress president said, “In addition to the Antony co-mmittee, one more official committee might be constituted to look into issues affecting (the state) on account of bifurcation.”

She, however, did not elaborate further.

With this the Congress president made it clear that the decision to divide the state was final.

Doubts raised over Sonia’s Telangana panel

Hyderabad: Congress president Sonia Gandhi responded to the concerns expressed by different sections of society and political parties in the state regarding the problems that were likely to surface on account of bifurcation.

Political parties had even asked in Parliament how the A.K. Antony Commi-ttee, a Congress-appointed body, would be able to meet leaders from other political parties and organisations who wanted to represent their issues.

Sources, however, wonder whether the official committee hinted by Mrs Gandhi will be different from the Group of Ministers, comprising 11 ministries in the Central government, which will debate and decide various issues concerning the bifurcation of the state.

In the past, a partition committee had been formed by the Centre which has decided issues of sharing revenues and fixing of boundaries etc.

According to sources, soon after the ongoing Parliament Session ends, the process of bifurcating the state  will be speeded up, like preparation of a note by the home ministry for the Cabinet, a policy decision by the Cabinet to divide the state, appointment of GoM, preparation of the Bill for Reorganisation of Andhra Pradesh etc.

The Cabinet will also have to decide on the status of Hyderabad, whether it will be a Union Territory while it is the joint capital for both Telangana and Seemandhra or will there be any special arrangement under the Constitution.

Clarity will come on the appointment of the official committee once the Central Cabinet sits and take a decision on carving out Telangana, sources added.

Sonia rules out early elections

New Delhi: Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday scotched speculation of early elections, claiming that the government will complete its full term  and come back to power.

“Our aim is to go till the very end,” Gandhi told reporters after inauguration of the National Media Centre here.

Countering her, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj claimed that the NDA is certain to form the next government.

The Congress president initially tried to steer clear of the question when asked by reporters whether the party would go in for polls after the passage of landmark legislations like the Food Security Bill and the Land Acquisition Bill.

“I cannot say  anything,” she remarked when another questioner posed the same query.

When journalists persisted, Mrs Gandhi gave the reply of going “till the very end”.
There has been talk of Lok Sabha polls, due next year in April-May, being combined with the Assembly polls in some states later this year in November.

She also expressed confidence that the UPA will come back to power after the  next polls, noting that the “rights” given to the people by the ruling alliance were its USP.
