HYDERABAD: Robbers killed an 18-year-old student and stole property worth Rs 35 lakh at Sitarambagh in the Old City on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Shiva Kumar, a Degree first year student was found murdered at his grandparents' house located at 'D' Class quarters at Sitarambagh on Sunday evening. The victim's parents live in Gudimalkapur and the teenager used to stay with his grandparents, Yellamma and Pochaiah at Sitarambagh.
Pochaiah and Yellamma run sand business and when the mishap occurred both of them were out of the house. When Yellamma returned to the house at 4.30 pm, she found Shiva Kumar lying unconscious on the bed with a lungi tied around his neck. Shiva's legs were also bound with a piece of lungi.
With the assistance of neighbours, she rushed Shiva to a nearby hospital where the teenager was declared brought dead. Habeebnagar police were then alerted about the incident and the body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital.
Pochaiah and Yellamma told the police that the cupboards in the house were opened with keys available nearby and a huge quantity of gold and Rs 11 lakh cash was stolen. "The victim was strangled to death. We are yet to ascertain the exact amount of property lost," Habeebnagar inspector NSV Venkateswar Rao said.
A case was registered under section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and a manhunt was launched to nab the culprits.
