HyderabadAccording to the National Crime Records Bureau data, there are absolutely no cases of incest reported in the city or in the state in the last three years. However, child psychologists, experts have a different view. They say that many such cases go unreported as the victims are reluctant or too scared to reveal the incident.
“It is surprising to see how there are no cases of incest reported at all. We do get at least three cases of abuse of kids every month. The kind of trauma that these kids go through is beyond imagination. Cases of incest, especially step fathers sexually abusing their daughters or  grandfathers or uncles involved in the same deed, are not rare,” said Dr. N. Radhika Acharya, psychologist and stress management consultant.
Child psychologists are stressing the need for compulsory awareness programmes for kids at school and even at home right from the age of six. Padmavati Vempati, chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Ranga Reddy district, said that most of the biology teachers skip the chapters about private parts of the body.
“Many find it awkward to teach this at school and skip these chapters. We need to change this whole idea and start educating children, specially girls, about  their private parts and how not even their fathers or brothers should touch them in a wrong way,” she said.
