Hyderabad: Union minister for human resource development M.M. Pallam Raju on Saturday said that India’s Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education will reach 30 per cent by 2020, from around 19 per cent at present due to the new efforts initiated by the government.
“Currently, we have a GER of close to 19 per cent, which is much below the 26 per cent average GER in global scenario. But we are sure that with the sustained efforts, we will be able to take our GER to 30 per cent by 2020,” said Raju while addressing audience at the fifth convocation of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) on Saturday at Gachibowli.
The minister said that though India boasts of the third largest education system in the world, next to US, our universities lag behind most European and East Asian universities due to the lack of substantive research activity.
Pointing out to the importance of raising the education level right from schools to higher institutes, he said, “It is important to integrate education with higher disciplines and bring an international focus on campuses.”
Meanwhile, chairman of Sachar Committee, Rajindar Sachar, criticised stakeholders for not pressurising the Centre to implement its recommendations. “We did our job. It was then the responsibility of the concerned people to take it forward,” he said.
