Visakhapatnam: The death toll in the HPCL-Visakh Refinery fire rose to six on Saturday.

Sources also said that five to six workers were still missing and it was being suspected that they might have been buried under the debris of the 50-ft wooden cooling tower, which had collapsed on Friday evening following the explosion.

While HPCL employee Chada Murali died on the spot, contract workers A. Apparao, A. Srinivasa Rao and Manojeet Pradhan, who were private employees working on the renovation and expansion of the cooling tower, succumbed to their injuries in the hospitals where they were undergoing treatment.

The bodies of  two other workers were found at the accident site on Saturday morning and their ide-ntities are yet to be established.

Six employees still missing

Visakhapatnam:  Many victims of the HPCL mishap, which took place on Friday, are still in hospitals. Around 32 injured are still undergoing treatment at various private hospitals in Vizag and the HPCL authorities are planning to airlift three or four of the critically injured to speciality hospitals in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

“There were around 100 workers at the time of the incident. While the remaining workers are safe or only suffered minor injuries, five to six workers are still missing. We are suspecting that they were caught in the debris.

Clearing the debris is also proving difficult due to non-availability of oxygen as one has to go down 20 feet. But we are confident of clearing the debris by evening,” said executive director of HPCL-Visakh Refinery V.V.R. Narasimham.

Meanwhile, the situation became chaotic at the HPCL transit house while top officials of the refinery were addressing the media.

Relatives of Murali, the worker who died on the spot, stormed the press conference venue and criticised the attitude of the officials for not giving them sufficient information about the body. “I have been going from one hospital to another since last nig-ht.

There was not even a single HPCL staffer at any of the hospitals to give us details. Even now I don’t know where the dead body is,” said a weeping Jayalakshmi, the deceased’s wife. Later, tribal welfare minister P. Balaraju pacified the irate kin of Murali.

Family members and relatives also gheraoed Union minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Panabaka Lakshmi.
