V. Hanumantha Rao
Tirupati: The Tirumala II-Town police on Sunday registered cases against senior Congress leader and MP V. Hanumantha Rao in connection with his provocative remarks against Seemandhra employees during his visit on Saturday for darshan of Lord Venkateswara.
Rao had said that all employees of Seemandhra region should leave Hyderabad after the state’s bifurcation and if they wanted to stay on, they should quit their government jobs. The remarks of the veteran Congress leader from Telangana led to widespread protests in the region, leading to a bandh call in Tirupati on Sunday.
Former chairman of Tirupati Urban Development Authority and former TTD board member Chevireddi Bhaskar Reddy, approached the urban police in Tirupati and lodged a complaint against Rao for violating the sanctity of Tirumala by talking divisive politics.
Based on the complaint, the cops referred the case to Tirumala II-Town which booked cases under sections 153 and 153A of the IPC against Rao. Rao, meanwhile, blamed the Telugu electronic media for distorting his comments in Tirumala. He demanded that the police book cases against the media and that he had not said anything defamatory.
The Telugu Nadu Students Federation also asked the police in Tirumala to arrest Rao for his ‘hatred-filled words’ towards Seemandhra people. Following the bandh call given by the Samaikyandhra students JAC on Sunday, Tirupati and other areas in Chittoor district came to a standstill as a strike by the RTC staff was already in force.
The Tirupati police on Sunday arrested three activists in the wee hours of Sunday and booked cases against twenty others under seven sections of the IPC for protesting against Rao’s comments.
The three main persons arrested included Dr K. Balasubramanyam, president, Samaikya Andhra Parirakshana Samithi and N. Raja Reddy, general secretary, SAPS and student of Sri Venkateswara University P. Harikrishna Yadav. They were produced before the fourth additional district judge here and were sent to judicial remand. Agitators gathered in the court premises and condemned the police action.
