Balaraju for Vizag as capital

DC | 2 hours 2 min ago

Visakhapatnam: Tribal welfare minister P. Balaraju has proposed that Vizag be made the capital for Seemandhra even while Samaikyandhra activists have been staging protests opposing bifurcation of the state. The minister wanted Visakhapatnam to be considered as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, if bifurcation is inevitable.

Interacting with mediapersons here on Wednesday, Balaraju said he would be suggesting the same to the Anthony Committee. The Congress high command has to reconsider its decision on separate Telangana, he said and added that it should respect the sentiments of people in Seemandhra. Majority of the people in the state want united Andhra Pradesh, he said.

“I personally feel Visakhapatnam is suitable to be a capital city as it has the infrastructure and can be improved further, as per the requirement. I will suggest the same to the Anthony Committee when they would collect opinions,” he said.

The minister was all praises for party president Sonia Gandhi for bringing out Food Security Bill, which provides subsidised food to nearly 70 per cent of the population in the country. He hoped it would benefit the poorest of the poor in the nation. He hoped Sonia would reconsider the decision on division of the state and take a final call again.

States: Andhra Pradesh
