Bhopal/ Jodhpur/New Delhi: A police team from Jodhpur after being asked to wait for several hours could finally serve the summons to the controversial spiritual guru Asaram Bapu at his Ashram in Indore on Tuesday in connection with alleged sexual abuse of a 16-year-old girl, a charge which has been refuted by the “godman”.

The police has also sought a look-out notice for Asaram to prevent him from fleeing the country.

When a two-member police team, headed by an ASI, went to the ashram on Tuesday at 8 am to deliver the summons, they were asked to wait till 2 pm by the attendants who said that the self-proclaimed “godman”was in meditation. A copy of this summon was served at his Ahemedabad Ashram on Monday.

As the summon has already been served, 73-year-old Asaram will now have to appear for questioning before the Jodhpur police by August 30.  The police has booked Asaram under Sections 342, 376, 506 and 509 of the IPC, Section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act  and also different sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.

“We have issued a request letter to joint director-immigration(in Bureau of Immigration in Delhi) seeking look-out notice against Asaram Bapu who has been summoned by Jodhpur police in connection with a sexual exploitation case lodged against him,” DCP Ajay Lamba said in Jodhpur.

Lamba said his team had to wait for nearly 8 hours at Asaram’s ashram in Indore to meet him personally for delivering the notice for questioning in connection with the allegation of sexual assault levelled by a 16-year-old girl.

Asked what the police will do if the accused failed to appear within the given time-frame, the officer said, “we will later decide what step we have to take if Asaram does not come”.

After being served summons, the spiritual guru refuted all charges levelled against him in the sexual assault case and claimed he was being framed. “There is a conspiracy to defame me”, he claimed while talking to reporters outside his ashram. He said the girl was forced to lodge a complaint against him.

Demanding strong action against Asaram, BSP supremo Mayawati said Rajasthan government “should not allow such people to go scot free”.

In a extreme remarks against the spiritual guru, CPI leader  Gurudas Dasgupta said, “What Asaram Bapu has done is inhuman, he must be hanged... I feel shamed myself. The anger should burst into flames. I have no idea why the Government of Rajasthan is not talking any step.”

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot , however, rejected suggestions that Jodhpur police are going soft on Asaram and said an impartial probe into the allegation is on.

Attacking the “godman”, Congress leader Digvijay Singh said it was not the first time that such complaints have been levelled against Asaram. “I would say that instead of running away, Asaram Bapu should present himself before the police.”
